Getting Ready for Kindergarten
Social Story - My New School
Please see the below link to the Social Story - My New School. This is a preview of the day in the life of a student at Marsden Park Public School. Please read this with your child to help support their transition to primary school.
School Readiness
The following school readiness checklist was compiled to provide an overview of your child’s:
- fine motor and pre-writing skills
- gross motor skills
- visual motor skills
- self-care (independent) skills
- cognitive and problem-solving skills
- social, language and emotional skills.
Please take the time to complete the checklist. You may find this useful to assist you in helping prepare your child for starting school.
Parent Resources
Getting Ready for Primary School
A positive start to school will help your child engage well with their peers and teachers and set them up for academic and social success.
The NSW Department of Education parent website contains some key points and documents
Student Activities
We have prepared some activities for our Kindergarten students of 2026 to complete at home to get ready for school. Your child will receive their activity pack during our Kindergarten Orientation sessions.
Preparing for School
Name Writing
Work with your child to practise writing their name, as learning to recognise and write their own name is important for building independence at school. Encourage your child to use fun materials like crayons or markers to make name writing an enjoyable daily activity.
Packing Bags and Lunchboxes
Encourage your child to help pack their school bag and lunchbox, as learning to organise their belongings is important for developing responsibility. Work with your child to choose healthy snacks and check that everything they need is ready for the school day.
Counting and Sorting
Work with your child to develop their counting skills. Practise counting forwards and backwards, touching to count objects in your house and learning to recognise numbers to 10.
Fine Motor Development
Fine motor development is essential for school readiness. Build strength in your child's fingers by engaging in activities such as cutting, drawing, beading, using pegs and tweezers.
Communicating Needs and Wants
Guide your child with strategies of how they can communicate their needs and wants with the teachers at school. Practise this by asking questions and ensuring your child knows what to do if they need to go to the toilet, do not feel well or when something is wrong.
